Japanese Meiji Satsuma Vase with Samurai Scenes – Attributed to Kinkozan Studio, Hand-Painted, Gilt Detailing

€790

Exceptional hand-painted Japanese Satsuma vase from the late Meiji period (circa 1880–1910), attributed to the renowned Kinkozan workshop in Kyoto.

This rare example features two intricate continuous scenes: one depicting a group of seated courtiers in elegant kimonos; the other — a dynamic assembly of samurai warriors in full armor, set against a finely rendered landscape.

The body is richly decorated with gilded geometric bands, while the shoulders are flanked by sculptural dragon handles — a feature reserved for prestigious export pieces.

Executed with minute precision, the decoration includes raised enamel details and extensive use of pure gold, a hallmark of the Kinkozan studio’s master painters. The dense, finely crackled ivory glaze is consistent with high-quality Kyoto ware.

Marking:

Signed on the base with a red and gold Kinkozan-style cartouche surrounded by the circular Dai Nippon (Great Japan) Satsuma seal, indicating high-end export production.

Chosen for today, grounded in history.

A well-placed antique does more than decorate a room - it gives it authorship. Against a contemporary interior, older objects introduce texture, balance and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by newly made pieces alone.
This is the principle behind the LÜRON selection. We look for works that carry historical character with ease, and that feel as convincing in a Paris apartment as they do in a more modern architectural setting.
