c. 1830 English Blue & White Transferware Plate with Pastoral Scene and Floral Border

€120

A beautiful early 19th-century English transferware plate in deep cobalt blue, dating to circa 1830. The central scene features a charming rural landscape with a figure by the water, a stone bridge, cottage, trees, and a classical building in the distance. It is framed by a wide floral border typical of high-Victorian aesthetics.

The plate is executed using the traditional transfer printing technique developed in Staffordshire, with crisp detailing and a rich tonal palette. The back is unmarked, which is consistent with the period and points to production by one of several noted potteries of the time, possibly Davenport, Clews, or Enoch Wood.

The glaze displays uniform crazing throughout, with two age-related hairline cracks visible on the front and reverse (one reaching inwards from the rim at approx. 5 o’clock position). There are no rim chips, and the plate remains structurally solid and visually impressive.

Chosen for today, grounded in history.

A well-placed antique does more than decorate a room - it gives it authorship. Against a contemporary interior, older objects introduce texture, balance and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by newly made pieces alone.
This is the principle behind the LÜRON selection. We look for works that carry historical character with ease, and that feel as convincing in a Paris apartment as they do in a more modern architectural setting.
