c.1820–1860, Bayeux Faience Plate with Oriental Floral Decor, Gilt & Cobalt Blue, France, 8.7 in

€290

Decorative French faience plate, most likely produced in Bayeux, Normandy, during the first half of the 19th century.

The plate features a richly hand-painted oriental-inspired floral decoration, combining vibrant red and green flowers with cobalt blue lambrequin motifs and finely applied gilded details. Yellow cartouches with stylized decorative elements reflect the continued influence of Asian ornamentation in French provincial faience of the period.

The slightly irregular shape, visible kiln support marks on the reverse, and freehand brushwork confirm its fully hand-crafted origin. The decorative scheme corresponds closely to documented Bayeux examples illustrated in 19th-century faience reference publications.

This piece was intended primarily as a decorative object rather than everyday tableware.

Chosen for today, grounded in history.

A well-placed antique does more than decorate a room - it gives it authorship. Against a contemporary interior, older objects introduce texture, balance and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by newly made pieces alone.
This is the principle behind the LÜRON selection. We look for works that carry historical character with ease, and that feel as convincing in a Paris apartment as they do in a more modern architectural setting.
