Antique Spanish Cantimplora – Hand-Painted Folk Pottery Water Flask, Blue and Yellow Glaze, 16x12 cm (6.3x4.7 in)

€390

This rare and authentic folk cantimplora (pilgrim flask) is a classic example of Spanish traditional ceramics, crafted entirely by hand and decorated in the recognizable tin-glaze technique of the Iberian Peninsula. Likely produced in the late 19th to early 20th century, possibly in Castilla-La Mancha or rural Andalucía, the flask features a distinctive flat round body with dual loop handles and a thick neck for carrying and pouring water.

Both sides are hand-painted in bold blue and yellow pigments, using traditional slip-trailing techniques to form interlaced bands and dots — likely stylized symbols of protection or local identity. The glaze shows pronounced craquelure, and the visible unglazed clay at the rim and interior neck confirms the use of low-fired, porous earthenware, typical of southern Spanish pottery traditions.

Rustic, practical, and expressive — this cantimplora is both an ethnographic object and a beautiful piece of decorative heritage.

Chosen for today, grounded in history.

A well-placed antique does more than decorate a room - it gives it authorship. Against a contemporary interior, older objects introduce texture, balance and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by newly made pieces alone.
This is the principle behind the LÜRON selection. We look for works that carry historical character with ease, and that feel as convincing in a Paris apartment as they do in a more modern architectural setting.
