1920-1940, Andor Basch - "Shepherd" oil on canvas,

Andor Basch (Budapest, 1885 - 1944) was a Hungarian painter whose works have been featured in the Hungarian National Gallery and just there at the Museum of Military History.

Andor Basch began his studies in 1904 at the drawing school in Budapest under Tivadar Zemplényi. From 1905-10 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris and was pupil of Jean Paul Laurens and Henri Matisse. During the summer months he visited the artist’ colony Nagybánya a couple of times.

During World War I he served as war artist; from this time many detailed descriptions of war events originate, for example In the Trenches Before the Attack from 1918. From 1920-31 he lived in Paris and Italy and only in 1935 returned to Budapest.

Chosen for today, grounded in history.

A well-placed antique does more than decorate a room - it gives it authorship. Against a contemporary interior, older objects introduce texture, balance and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by newly made pieces alone.
This is the principle behind the LÜRON selection. We look for works that carry historical character with ease, and that feel as convincing in a Paris apartment as they do in a more modern architectural setting.
