A magnificent Napoleon III period mantel clock, dating to around 1865–1875, crafted in deep bleu de Sèvres porcelain and richly decorated with finely chased gilt bronze (ormolu). This is an exceptional and large example of the French Second Empire style, bringing together luxurious materials, exquisite sculptural detail and the precision of a prestigious Parisian movement.
Design & Materials
The clock is composed of a monumental vase-form body in intense royal Sèvres blue, framed with lavish gilt bronze ornamentation. The front is adorned with garlands, acanthus and floral motifs; the sides feature classical lion’s mascarons and suspended tassels; the base is animated by two beautifully modelled winged cherubs playing musical instruments.
Crowning the piece is a sculptural group of two doves resting on a bouquet of roses, symbolising harmony and affection—a common motif in luxurious wedding gifts of the period.
The quality of the ormolu is outstanding, with crisp chasing, heavy casting and a rich gilded surface that has survived remarkably well.
Movement
The clock houses an original Japy Frères & Cie movement, bearing the prestigious “Médaille d’Honneur” stamp, one of the highest distinctions awarded to the firm at the Universal Exhibitions.
Japy Frères movements were widely used by leading Parisian clockmakers and remain highly regarded for their quality and craftsmanship.

Condition
The porcelain is in outstanding condition, with no visible cracks, chips or restoration. The gilt bronze mounts retain their original gilding with an attractive warm patina consistent with age.
The enamel numeral I shows evidence of an old restoration.
The clock is missing its pendulum and has not been tested. Although the movement appears visually complete and in good condition, its working order cannot be guaranteed.
The strike mechanism (bell assembly) is detached and no longer present on the clock.
The original front glass covering the dial and the rear protective cover of the movement are absent.
No structural losses to the gilt bronze mounts were observed. Overall, the clock presents beautifully and remains in very good antique condition with wear consistent with age.
