18thc Spanish Baroque Oil Painting – Pietà with Mater Dolorosa and Angel, Spain

€1.850

This expressive 18th-century Spanish oil painting captures a profound moment of sorrow and transcendence: the Virgin Mary as Mater Dolorosa cradles the lifeless body of Christ beneath the cross. Seven swords pierce her chest, symbolizing the fullness of her grief. At the lower right, a small angel gently supports Christ’s hand—an unusual and tender gesture hinting at divine compassion.

Rendered in the rich, dramatic chiaroscuro of the Spanish Baroque tradition, this painting reflects strong Sevillian or Castilian influence, both in palette and form. The dense, emotional intensity and folk devotional style suggest it was created for a private chapel or monastic cell rather than for public liturgy.

The painting remains on its original hand-carved stretcher, with aged linen weave visible on the back. Patina, craquelure, and minor abrasions reflect authentic 18th-century wear. The work has not been relined or heavily restored.

Chosen for today, grounded in history.

A well-placed antique does more than decorate a room - it gives it authorship. Against a contemporary interior, older objects introduce texture, balance and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by newly made pieces alone.
This is the principle behind the LÜRON selection. We look for works that carry historical character with ease, and that feel as convincing in a Paris apartment as they do in a more modern architectural setting.
